Dear ut2004-Community;

Mark Spitz wrote:

By making a comeback, I'm changing the attitude of people toward me. If I'd known that people would react so enthusiastically, I'd have done it years ago.

I have no idea who Mark Spitz is but you get the point: our beloved little community is stirring up some dust. You might even say there’s fresh air being pumped through it.

Could it be that finally, after a lot of effort from multiple people, we are on the rise again? Cups, top players, prize money, it seems these terms are from an era long gone and yet here we are in 2011. New ways to decline the easily-used “dead game” term. And for the first time in a long time it seems to actually be working!

One of the things I have noticed however is that most of these “rezzes” occur during the summer, people have time of school, holiday from work,… A lot more time is generated in the long days of summer. There’s something about the summer, something that just makes you want to play
The thing is, it has been done multiple times, I myself for instance, revived the unrealnorth- pickup during the summer of 2007 or so.
The last and still running (albeit some downtime in January) TDM pickup: #tdminvite, is still riding hard. Beware though, Silver & Sebo, are the toplads in the joint.

We have cups over at ESL:

Unreal Tournament 2004 Country Championship 2011
TDM 2on2 Spring League 2011

Status - Ongoing.

And Clanbase:

Spring Season 2011

TDM (20 signups so far.)
TAM (57 signups so far.)
ICTF (29 signups so far.)
ITDM (29 signups so far.)

Status - Signups closing Sunday 20/03.

Nationscup TAM
Nationscup ICTF

Status - Ongoing.

rmzs has reestablished himself amongst the community and even astz & hypno are making appearances. Illegal anti-cheat scanners with cheeky filenames are being developed as we speak.

We have been treated to some nice matches and a thrilling final between ScrMz & GoHLinK during the first zYme Cup.

Unrealnorth came back up after some downtime due to harddrive failure this took the site back to a 2009 backup, it seems to have been for the best because since then “activity” has been sprouting everywhere.
There are even talks about improving the site even more, after years of dedication and hard work NakedApe has carried on the baton over to PissedNumlock, who clearly wants to prove himself!
The “never say die” Belgian has earned himself a spot amongst the greatest, a spot, which by the way he already had, due to individual speed, stamina & skill. He has helped this community through so much pain and misery. His Belgian LAN-adversaries don’t call him “The Hat of Sterrebeek” for nothing. Hat, implying that he has style, A true suave gentleman.

Vlad has released one of the best movies to date, embodying the soul of the community.
“Unrealnorth Forever”!
lozZz had the following to say:
I loved all of the songs, and awesome frags. Excellent movie:) names of songs?...

We even saw degnic kindly offering 50€ for a future cup.

We will also have some sort of All-Star competitions incoming, with duel on Sunday the 27 of March - 18 CET and 4on4 TDM, Sunday the 27 of March - 21 CET. It’s sure to be covered in any way possible.

It however isn’t all flowers and sunshine our beloved defender Nate Dogg has passed away recently.

The news post explains it pretty well Here

zYme Cups

Admin’d and maintained by zelvZ Spighty & vybz.

We have seen a few cups these last few years, one more successful than the other. But they had one thing in common: no prize money. You could obtain the odd bnc or what not but no cold hard cash anymore.
Now this is where the zYme Cups differ: they are dealing out money for the victor(s). If that wasn’t enough: it seems that this is going to be a repeating occurrence.

Now you, sitting behind your screen, might be wondering to yourself: “Nex? Why would we play we aren’t as good as some of the names in there, I can barely beat BQ!”

I will answer this question by shamefully copying something said by rmzs on the JeeSport Forums

I think everyone wants to measure themselves against the best players, even "noobs". And also, people play these cups to be a part of an online "spectacle", and that spectacle is just greater when money is on stake. For spectators too it gives that extra bit of excitement to know they are actually competing for money.

The first edition of the zYme Cup was held last Sunday, 13/03.
It had 43 players competing and a 50€ prize pool that was awarded to ScrMz!*.
It had some nice coverage including UTV, Shoutcast and Streaming by Mojawi-Gaming.

zYme Cup #2 3rd April 2011 (CHECK IN starts at 12:00. Cup begins at 14:00.)

It currently has 79 signups.
Including names like:

The Former K1ck Powerhouses:
hypno
Psy
skew

The (former) Dignitas Wrecking Crew:
astz
Frantic
GoHLinK
ScrMz

Razor-sponsored ScHiScH
Long haired rmzs
& wingz

This time you can already see the influx of the older players, the prize pool itself is also in a state of flux, reaching 100€ this time around.

It aint pocket money anymore bitches!

Mojawi Gaming

This French speaking team has started streaming ut2004 games on a regular basis. These streams also include a shoutcaster. The last time I listened in, it was French! However, that is all going to change:

Mojawi-Gaming is searching for streamers/shoutcasters for FPS games as they want to do one or two streams every night for UT2004! This could be your chance to step up and make a real contribution for the UT2004 community!

eXen wrote:

Ok, seems something isn't clear. We aren't looking for ONE shoutcast who should stream every night, but about 3 - 4 in order to offer UT streams every night ! We have already 2 streamers who are already ok to stream some games ! But I think we really need more streamers to stream 4 pickups a night and make it reliable ! So if you are interested, don't hesitate to pm me on irc #mojawi !

Personally I love going over the Video of Demand, or VoD, section over at QuadV . I don’t necessarily need to know let alone own a game to watch it. Players who don’t have the game installed, don’t own it, lost it, … they can all enjoy some proper ut2004 action again!

JeeSports

Another initiative led by zelvZ from the community and I believe iamKira aka iKill4Fun etc... :-)” from JeeSports.

This new league, which only last week had its first successful cup (QuakeLive, k1llsen taking the 100€ Prize), has accepted ut2004 amongst its supported games.
JeeSports will host a duelcup with a 100€ Cashprize bi-weekly.

Besides that there have also been talks of an UTCL/MLU style tournament. Where instead of a normal one gametype match, the outcome gets decided over duel, 2v2 TDM, 4v4 TDM (or other variations).

Join in on the discussion now over at JeeSports

#JeeSports.UT

Now after reading all of this, tell me you don’t see a change. All in all it is clear to see that the ut2004 is long from dead. It fills my heart with joy to see so many people willing to relive the glory days and make the game last. So for that I thank you all!
